While snorkeling the shallow waters around Smith Island on a clear spring day, I came face to claw with a true icon of the Chesapeake — the Maryland Blue Crab. As I drifted with my camera just beneath the surface, one bold crab caught sight of its reflection in my lens port and did what blue crabs do best: it squared up and came charging.

Photographed with a wide-angle lens in its natural underwater environment, this image captures the boldness, beauty, and grit of the species that defines the Bay’s culture and cuisine.
