As the sun dipped below the horizon off the coast of Chincoteague, Virginia, I captured this striking silhouette of a heron perched high in a rookery. The summer light cast the sky in a brilliant golden glow, creating the perfect contrast to the bird's elegant form.

This was a planned shoot—one that had me quietly drifting in a boat, telephoto lens ready, watching a colony of herons settle in for the evening. What stopped me in my tracks was the wind catching the bird’s feathers—delicate, wild, and full of texture. Every plume told its own story, framed against the glowing sky.
